Improved simulations of biomass burning aerosol optical properties and lifetimes in the NASA GEOS Model during the ORACLES-I campaign

Abstract. In order to improve aerosol representation in the NASA Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) model, we evaluated simulations of the transport and properties of aerosols from southern African biomass burning sources that were observed during the first deployment of the NASA ORACLES (ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their intEractionS) field campaign in September 2016. An example case study of 24 September was analyzed in detail, during which aircraft-based in situ and remote sensing observations showed the presence of a multi-layered smoke plume structure with significant vertical variation in single scattering albedo (SSA). Our baseline GEOS simulations were not able to represent the observed SSA variation or the observed organic aerosol-to-black-carbon ratio (OA : BC). Analyzing the simulated smoke age suggests that the higher-altitude, less absorbing smoke plume was younger (∼4 d), while the lower-altitude and more absorbing smoke plume was older (∼7 d). We hypothesize a chemical or microphysical loss process exists to explain the change in aerosol absorption as the smoke plume ages, and we apply a simple loss rate to the model hydrophilic biomass burning OA to simulate this process. We also utilized the ORACLES airborne observations to better constrain the simulation of aerosol optical properties, adjusting the assumed particle size, hygroscopic growth, and absorption. Our final GEOS model simulation with additional OA loss and updated optics showed better performance in simulating aerosol optical depth (AOD) and SSA compared to independent ground- and space-based retrievals for the entire month of September 2016, including the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) Aerosol Index. In terms of radiative implications of our model adjustments, the final GEOS simulation suggested a decreased atmospheric warming of about 10 % (∼2 W m−2) over the southeastern Atlantic region and above the stratocumulus cloud decks compared to the model baseline simulations. These results improve the representation of the smoke age, transport, and optical properties in Earth system models.

Comprehensive the seasonal characterization of atmospheric submicron particles at urban sites in the North China Plain

To comprehensively investigate the seasonal variations in submicron particles (PM1 = NR-PM1 + BC) composition, sources and chemical processes, an Aerodyne high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS), along with a multiangle absorption photometer (MAAP), was deployed to observe at urban sites in the North China Plain from October 1, 2015, to July 31, 2016. The PM1 average mass were 36.4 ± 39.0, 32.9 ± 20.7, 40.4 ± 52.4 and 99.0 ± 88.7 μg m−3 in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. On the whole, the OA accounted for the largest component of PM1 during the four seasons, with the highest contribution in winter, accounting for 49% on average, followed by autumn (47%), spring (40%) and summer (31%). The secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) mass concentration in summer was the lowest but contributed the most to PM1 in summer (62%), and it was higher than that in spring (46%), autumn (43%) and winter (41%). Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was used to differentiate the high-resolution mass spectra (HRMS) of organic aerosol (OA) into six factors, including two secondary OA (highly oxidized, low-volatility oxygenated organic aerosols (LV-OOA) and less oxidized, semi-volatile oxygenated OA (SV-OOA)) and four primary OA (including cooking-related OA (COA), hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA), biomass burning OA (BBOA) and coal combustion OA (CCOA)). OOA (LV-OOA + SV-OOA) exhibited the highest OA loading in summer (59%), while POA (CCOA + COA + HOA) exhibited the highest OA loading in winter (62%). The OA exhibited similar bimodal diurnal patterns during the four seasons, the nitrate and sulfate seasonal diurnal variations slightly differed, and the peak value occurred at night in winter and in the morning during the other seasons. The trend of the LV-OOA and SV-OOA diurnal variation in spring, autumn and winter appeared small difference, and the summer vary differently compared to other seasons. However, the diurnal mass concentration in winter was much higher than other seasons. The COA diurnal pattern peaked at noon and at night during the four seasons, corresponding to the peak hours of dining activities. The HOA, BBOA and CCOA seasonal diurnal patterns showed low concentrations during the daytime and high concentrations at night. OA on HPD was 6, 7 and 7 times higher than that on CD in spring, autumn and winter. The SIA concentration significantly increased on HPD in spring (69.3 μg m−3, 52%), autumn (80.6 μg m−3, 50%) and winter (82.4 μg m−3, 43%). The organic nitrate average mass concentrations were 0.6 ± 0.5, 0.7 ± 0.2, 0.8 ± 1.2 and 2.5 ± 2.3 μg m−3 in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. The organic nitrate diurnal pattern appeared at night was higher than that during the daytime in spring, autumn and winter. The opposite diurnal pattern emerged in summer. The average mass concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the entire observation period reached 73.2 ± 154.2 ng m−3, and the seasonal average mass were 30.4 ± 30.6, 10.7 ± 4.0, 40.5 ± 10.3 and 220.3 ± 246.7 ng m−3 in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. The highest diurnal values in spring, summer, autumn and winter were 44.2, 11.7, 71.6 and 366.8 ng m−3, respectively.

Reactive oxygen species generation from winter water-soluble organic aerosols in Delhi's PM2.5

In this study, we evaluate the relative redox activity of various water-soluble organic aerosol (WSOA) sources in Delhi's winter PM2.5, focusing on their capacity to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Using offline-aerosol mass spectrometry (AMS) and positive matrix factorization (PMF), we identified two oxidized factors—more oxidized oxygenated organic aerosol (MO-OOA) and less oxidized oxygenated organic aerosol (LO-OOA)—and three primary factors, namely nitrogen-enriched hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (NHOA), biomass-burning organic aerosol (BBOA), and solid-fuel combustion organic aerosol (SFC-OA). The ROS-generating capability of PM2.5 was assessed using a real-time oxidative potential (OP) measurement system based on the dithiothreitol (DTT) assay. We employed multivariate linear regression technique (MLR) to explore the association between the DTT activity of water-soluble PM2.5 and these identified factors. We found BBOA, SFCOA, and MO-OOA significantly contributed to volume-normalized OP, with intrinsic water-soluble activities of 39 ± 11, 106 ± 31 and 160 ± 43 pmol/min/μg, respectively. MO-OOA, primarily from non-fossil precursors, serves as a proxy for aged biomass burning, which intensifies during winter and significantly influences the DTT activity. Additionally, OP is significantly influenced by WSOA derived from local incomplete solid fuel combustion sources, including coal and wood burning for household cooking and heating, burning of leaves, biodegradable waste, and garbage along the roadside. Interestingly, water-soluble metals (Mn, Cu, and Fe) showed no discernible contribution to the OP. These findings highlight the need for targeted mitigation strategies addressing local combustion processes and unregulated biomass burning to effectively reduce PM health exposure in Delhi.

Chemical Fingerprinting of Biomass Burning Organic Aerosols from Sugar Cane Combustion: Complementary Findings from Field and Laboratory Studies.

Agricultural fires are a major source of biomass-burning organic aerosols (BBOAs) with impacts on health, the environment, and climate. In this study, globally relevant BBOA emissions from the combustion of sugar cane in both field and laboratory experiments were analyzed using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The derived chemical fingerprints of fresh emissions were evaluated using targeted and nontargeted evaluation approaches. The open-field sugar cane burning experiments revealed the high chemical complexity of combustion emissions, including compounds derived from the pyrolysis of (hemi)cellulose, lignin, and further biomass, such as pyridine and oxime derivatives, methoxyphenols, and methoxybenzenes, as well as triterpenoids. In comparison, laboratory experiments could only partially model the complexity of real combustion events. Our results showed high variability between the conducted field and laboratory experiments, which we, among others, discuss in terms of differences in combustion conditions, fuel composition, and atmospheric processing. We conclude that both field and laboratory studies have their merits and should be applied complementarily. While field studies under real-world conditions are essential to assess the general impact on air quality, climate, and environment, laboratory studies are better suited to investigate specific emissions of different biomass types under controlled conditions.

Enhanced net CO2 exchange of a semideciduous forest in the southern Amazon due to diffuse radiation from biomass burning

Abstract. Carbon cycling in the Amazon fundamentally depends on the functioning of ecosystems and atmospheric dynamics, which are highly intricate. Few studies have hitherto investigated or measured the radiative effects of aerosols on the Amazon and Cerrado. This study examines the effects of atmospheric aerosols on solar radiation and their effects on net ecosystem exchange (NEE) in an area of semideciduous tropical forest in the north of Mato Grosso. Our results show that for a relative irradiance (f) 1.10–0.67, a decrease in incident solar radiation is associated with a reduction in the NEE. However, an average increase of 25 %–110 % in NEE was observed when pollution levels and aerosol optical depth (AOD) were above ≈ 1.25 and f < 0.5. The increase NEE was attributed to the increase of up to 60 % in the diffuse fraction of photosynthetically active radiation. The change in AOD and f was mainly attributable to biomass burning organic aerosols from fires. Important influences on vapor pressure deficit (VPD) as well as air temperature (Tair) and canopy (LCT), induced by the interaction between solar radiation and high aerosol load in the observation area, were also noticed. On average, a cooling of about 3–4 ∘C was observed for Tair and LCT, and a decrease of up to 2–3 hPa was observed for VPD. Given the long-distance transport of aerosols emitted by burning biomass, significant changes in atmospheric optical properties and irradiance will impact the CO2 flux of semideciduous forests distributed in the region.

Iron content in aerosol particles and its impact on atmospheric chemistry.

Atmospheric aerosol effects on ecological and human health remain uncertain due to their highly complex and evolving nature when suspended in air. Atmospheric chemistry, global climate/oceanic and health exposure models need to incorporate more realistic representations of aerosol particles, especially their bulk and surface chemistry, to account for the evolution in aerosol physicochemical properties with time. (Photo)chemistry driven by iron (Fe) in atmospheric aerosol particles from natural and anthropogenic sources remains limited in these models, particularly under aerosol liquid water conditions. In this feature article, recent advances from our work on Fe (photo)reactivity in multicomponent aerosol systems are highlighted. More specifically, reactions of soluble Fe with aqueous extracts of biomass burning organic aerosols and proxies of humic like substances leading to brown carbon formation are presented. Some of these reactions produced nitrogen-containing gaseous and condensed phase products. For comparison, results from these bulk aqueous phase chemical studies were compared to those from heterogeneous reactions simulating atmospheric aging of Fe-containing reference materials. These materials include Arizona test dust (AZTD) and combustion fly ash particles. Also, dissolution of Fe and other trace elements is presented from simulated human exposure experiments to highlight the impact of aerosol aging on levels of trace metals. The impacts of these chemical reactions on aerosol optical, hygroscopic and morphological properties are also emphasized in light of their importance to aerosol-radiation and aerosol-cloud interactions, in addition to biogeochemical processes at the sea/ocean surface microlayer upon deposition. Future directions for laboratory studies on Fe-driven multiphase chemistry are proposed to advance knowledge and encourage collaborations for efficient utilization of expertise and resources among climate, ocean and health scientific communities.

Rapid transformation of wildfire emissions to harmful background aerosol

Wildfires are a significant source of organic aerosol during summer, with major impacts on air quality and climate. However, studies in Europe suggest a surprisingly low (less than 10%) contribution of biomass burning organic aerosol to average summertime fine particulate matter levels. In this study we combine field measurements and atmospheric chemical transport modeling, to demonstrate that the contribution of wildfires to fine particle levels in Europe during summer is seriously underestimated. Our work suggests that the corresponding contribution has been underestimated by a factor of 4–7 and that wildfires were responsible for approximately half of the total OA in Europe during July 2022. This discrepancy with previous work is due to the rapid physicochemical transformation of these emissions to secondary oxidized organic aerosol with an accompanying loss of its organic chemical fingerprints. These atmospheric reactions lead to a regionally distributed background organic aerosol that is responsible for a significant fraction of the health-related impacts caused by fine particles in Europe and probably in other continents. These adverse health effects can occur hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away from the fires. We estimate that wildfire emissions are responsible for 15–22% of the deaths in Europe due to exposure to fine particulate matter during summer.

Contribution of fossil and biomass-derived secondary organic carbon to winter water-soluble organic aerosols in Delhi, India

Delhi, among the world's most polluted megacities, is a hotspot of particulate matter emissions, with high contribution from organic aerosol (OA), affecting health and climate in the entire northern India. While the primary organic aerosol (POA) sources can be effectively identified, an incomplete source apportionment of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) causes significant ambiguity in the management of air quality and the assessment of climate change. Present study uses positive matrix factorization analysis on the water-soluble organic aerosol (WSOA) data from the offline-aerosol mass spectrometry (AMS). It revealed POA as the dominant source of WSOA, with biomass-burning OA (31–34 %) and solid fuel combustion OA (∼21 %) being two major contributors. Here we use water-solubility fingerprints to track the SOA precursors, such as oxalates or organic nitrates, instead of identifying them based on their O:C ratio. Non-fossil precursors dominate in more oxidized oxygenated organic carbon (MO-OOC) (∼90 %), a proxy for aged secondary organic carbon (SOC), by coupling offline-AMS with 14C measurements. On the contrary, the oxidation of fossil fuel emissions produces a large quantity of fresh fossil SOC, which accounts for ∼75 % of less oxidized oxygenated organic carbon (LO-OOC). Our study reveals that apart from major POA contributions, large fractions of fossil (10–14 %) and biomass-derived SOA (23–30 %) contribute significantly to the total WSOA load, having impact on climate and air quality of the Delhi megacity. Our study reveals that large-scale unregulated biomass burning was not only found to dominate in POA but was also observed to be a significant contributor to SOA with implications on human health, highlighting the need for effective control strategies.

Impact of Biomass Burning Organic Aerosol Volatility on Smoke Concentrations Downwind of Fires.

Biomass burning particulate matter (BBPM) affects regional air quality and global climate, with impacts expected to continue to grow over the coming years. We show that studies of North American fires have a systematic altitude dependence in measured BBPM normalized excess mixing ratio (NEMR; ΔPM/ΔCO), with airborne and high-altitude studies showing a factor of 2 higher NEMR than ground-based measurements. We report direct airborne measurements of BBPM volatility that partially explain the difference in the BBPM NEMR observed across platforms. We find that when heated to 40-45 °C in an airborne thermal denuder, 19% of lofted smoke PM1 evaporates. Thermal denuder measurements are consistent with evaporation observed when a single smoke plume was sampled across a range of temperatures as the plume descended from 4 to 2 km altitude. We also demonstrate that chemical aging of smoke and differences in PM emission factors can not fully explain the platform-dependent differences. When the measured PM volatility is applied to output from the High Resolution Rapid Refresh Smoke regional model, we predict a lower PM NEMR at the surface compared to the lofted smoke measured by aircraft. These results emphasize the significant role that gas-particle partitioning plays in determining the air quality impacts of wildfire smoke.

Phase Behavior and Viscosity in Biomass Burning Organic Aerosol and Climatic Impacts.

Smoke particles generated by burning biomass consist mainly of organic aerosol termed biomass burning organic aerosol (BBOA). BBOA influences the climate by scattering and absorbing solar radiation or acting as nuclei for cloud formation. The viscosity and the phase behavior (i.e., the number and type of phases present in a particle) are properties of BBOA that are expected to impact several climate-relevant processes but remain highly uncertain. We studied the phase behavior of BBOA using fluorescence microscopy and showed that BBOA particles comprise two organic phases (a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic phase) across a wide range of atmospheric relative humidity (RH). We determined the viscosity of the two phases at room temperature using a photobleaching method and showed that the two phases possess different RH-dependent viscosities. The viscosity of the hydrophobic phase is largely independent of the RH from 0 to 95%. We use the Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman equation to extrapolate our results to colder and warmer temperatures, and based on the extrapolation, the hydrophobic phase is predicted to be glassy (viscosity >1012 Pa s) for temperatures less than 230 K and RHs below 95%, with possible implications for heterogeneous reaction kinetics and cloud formation in the atmosphere. Using a kinetic multilayer model (KM-GAP), we investigated the effect of two phases on the atmospheric lifetime of brown carbon within BBOA, which is a climate-warming agent. We showed that the presence of two phases can increase the lifetime of brown carbon in the planetary boundary layer and polar regions compared to previous modeling studies. Hence, the presence of two phases can lead to an increase in the predicted warming effect of BBOA on the climate.

Global Health and Climate Effects of Organic Aerosols from Different Sources.

The impact of aerosols on human health and climate is well-recognized, yet many studies have only focused on total PM2.5 or changes from anthropogenic activities. This study quantifies the health and climate effects of organic aerosols (OA) from anthropogenic, biomass burning, and biogenic sources. Using two atmospheric chemistry models, CAM-chem and GEOS-Chem, our findings reveal that anthropogenic primary OA (POA) has the highest efficiency for health effects but the lowest for direct radiative effects due to spatial and temporal variations associated with population and surface albedo. The treatment of POA as nonvolatile or semivolatile also influences these efficiencies through different chemical processes. Biogenic OA shows moderate efficiency for health effects and the highest for direct radiative effects but has the lowest efficiency for indirect effects due to the reduced high cloud, caused by stabilized temperature profiles from aerosol-radiation interactions in biogenic OA-rich regions. Biomass burning OA is important for cloud radiative effect changes in remote atmospheres due to its ability to be transported further than other OAs. This study highlights the importance of not only OA characteristics such as toxicity and refractive index but also atmospheric processes such as transport and chemistry in determining health and climate impact efficiencies.

Characterizing the sources of ambient PM10 organic aerosol in urban and rural Catalonia, Spain

Organic aerosols (OA) have recently been shown to be the dominant contributor to the oxidative potential of airborne particulate matter in northeastern Spain. We collected PM10 filter samples every fourth day from January 2017 to March 2018 at two sampling stations located in Barcelona city and Montseny Natural Park, representing urban and rural areas, respectively. The chemical composition of PM10 was analyzed offline using a broad set of analytical instruments, including high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HR-ToF-AMS), a total organic carbon analyzer (TCA), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), ion chromatography (IC), and thermal-optical carbon analyzer. Source apportionment analysis of the water-soluble organic content of the samples measured via HR-ToF-AMS revealed two primary and two secondary sources of OA, which included biomass-burning OA (BBOA), sulfur-containing OA (SCOA), as well as summer- and winter‑oxygenated OA (SOOA and WOOA). The presence of hydrocarbon-like water-insoluble OA was also identified based on concentration trends in black carbon and nitrogen oxides. The results from the source apportionment analysis of the inorganic composition were correlated with different OA factors to assess potential source contributors. Barcelona showed significantly higher average water-soluble OA concentrations (5.63 ± 0.56 μg m-3) than Montseny (3.27 ± 0.37 μg m-3) over the sampling period. WOOA accounted for nearly 27 % of the averaged OA in Barcelona compared to only 7 % in Montseny. In contrast, SOOA had a greater contribution to OA in Montseny (47 %) than in Barcelona (24 %). SCOA and BBOA were responsible for 15–28 % of the OA at both sites. There were also seasonal variations in the relative contributions of different OA sources. Our overall results showed that local anthropogenic sources were primarily responsible for up to 70 % of ambient soluble OA in Barcelona, and regulating local-scale emissions could significantly improve air quality in urban Spain.

Aging of biomass burning emissions in the Indo-Gangetic Plain outflow: Implications for black carbon light-absorption enhancement

Recent studies worldwide have demonstrated that coating on atmospheric black carbon (BC) aerosol enhances its absorption potential. However, studies quantifying the light-absorption enhancement (Eabs) of BC are extremely limited over the Indian region. The northwestern Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) region witnesses annual episodes of substantial crop-residue burning during the post-monsoon season (PoMS), which has been attracting wide attention due to its impact on regional air quality and aerosol characteristics. Chemical aging of these biomass burning (BB) emissions occurs during its long-range transport across the IGP by the weak westerlies, and such atmospheric processing affects their chemical, optical, and radiative properties over downwind locations. This study examines the impact of atmospheric aging of biomass burning emissions on BC light-absorption enhancement (Eabs) using extensive, simultaneous measurements of single particle refractory BC and near-real-time mass spectrometry measurements of non-refractory submicron aerosols from an IGP outflow site. It was observed that organics were the dominant submicron aerosol species, and positive matrix factorization analysis of the organics mass spectra suggested that a large fraction of organics (64%) was secondary in nature. The BC particles in the IGP outflow (mass median diameter ∼ 0.18 ± 0.01 μm) were found to be thickly coated with volume-weighted bulk relative coating thickness in the range of 1.3–1.8. The evolution of biomass-burning organic aerosols (BBOA) indicated the presence of significant amounts of aged BBOA during the PoMS. Further, the oxidation products from the evolution of BB emissions contributed to enhanced coatings (∼ 30–70%) on BC. Mie core-shell theory calculations were then used to assess the changes in BC light absorption characteristics due to the coating of non-refractory mass on its cores. It was found that thick coatings on BC led to significant light-absorption enhancement (Eabs) (bulk Eabs in the range of 1.14–1.94 at 550 nm, depending on the extent of coating). Increased Eabs values of ≥1.8 were seen when the coating on BC exceeded 60% of its core size. The modeled bulk Eabs at 550 nm depicted a better association with highly oxidized secondary organic aerosols (SOA) than sulfate among the secondary aerosol species, suggesting an SOA-dominant regime. The present findings suggest that the critical impact of the aging of BC and co-emitted species from widespread BB emissions in the IGP outflow should be considered when evaluating the regional radiative implications.

Chemical evolution of primary and secondary biomass burning aerosols during daytime and nighttime

Abstract. Primary emissions from wood and pellet stoves were aged in an atmospheric simulation chamber under daytime and nighttime conditions. The aerosol was analyzed with online aerosol mass spectrometry and offline Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Measurements using the two techniques agreed reasonably well in terms of the organic aerosol (OA) mass concentration, OA:OC trends, and concentrations of biomass burning markers – lignin-like compounds and anhydrosugars. Based on aerosol mass spectrometry, around 15 % of the primary organic aerosol (POA) mass underwent some form of transformation during daytime oxidation conditions after 6–10 h of atmospheric exposure. A lesser extent of transformation was observed during the nighttime oxidation. The decay of certain semi-volatile (e.g., levoglucosan) and less volatile (e.g., lignin-like) POA components was substantial during aging, highlighting the role of heterogeneous reactions and gas–particle partitioning. Lignin-like compounds were observed to degrade under both daytime and nighttime conditions, whereas anhydrosugars degraded only under daytime conditions. Among the marker mass fragments of primary biomass burning OA (bbPOA), heavy ones (higher m/z) were relatively more stable during aging. The biomass burning secondary OA (bbSOA) became more oxidized with continued aging and resembled that of aged atmospheric organic aerosols. The bbSOA formed during daytime oxidation was dominated by acids. Organonitrates were an important product of nighttime reactions in both humid and dry conditions. Our results underline the importance of changes to both the primary and secondary biomass burning aerosols during their atmospheric aging. Heavier fragments from aerosol mass spectrometry seldom used in atmospheric chemistry can be used as more stable tracers of bbPOA and, in combination with the established levoglucosan marker, can provide an indication of the extent of bbPOA aging.

Ultrahigh performance LC/FT-MS non-targeted screening for biomass burning organic aerosol with MZmine2 and MFAssignR

In recent years, ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography Fourier transform mass spectrometry (LC/FT-MS) based non-targeted screening (NTS) methods have become increasingly popular for comprehensive analysis of complex organic mixtures. However, applying these methods for environmental complex mixture analysis is challenging due to the extreme complexity of natural samples and a lack of standard samples or surrogates for environmental complex mixtures. Furthermore, limited molecular markers in the databases and insufficient data processing software workflows make the application of these methods more challenging for environmental complex mixtures. In this work, we implement a new NTS data processing workflow to process data collected from ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography and Fourier transform Orbitrap Elite Mass Spectrometry (LC/FT-MS) by combining MZmine2 and MFAssignR, two opensource data processing tools and commercial Mesquite liquid smoke as a surrogate for biomass burning organic aerosol. MZmine2.53 data extraction followed MFAssignR molecular formula assignment offered noise free and highly accurate 1733 individual molecular formulas presented in liquid smoke with 4906 molecular species, including isomers. The results of this new approach were consistent with the results of direct infusion FT-MS analysis confirming its reliability. Over 90% of the molecular formulas presented in mesquite liquid smoke were matched with the molecular formulas of ambient biomass burning organic aerosol. This suggests the potential use of commercial liquid smoke is an acceptable surrogate for biomass burning organic aerosol research. The presented method significantly improves the identification of the molecular composition of biomass burning organic aerosol by successfully addressing some of the limitations related to the data analysis and giving a semi quantitative insight into the analysis.

A 1-year aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM) source analysis of organic aerosol particle contributions from anthropogenic sources after long-range transport at the TROPOS research station Melpitz

Abstract. Atmospheric aerosol particles are a complex combination of primary emitted sources (biogenic and anthropogenic) and secondary aerosol resulting from aging processes such as condensation, coagulation, and cloud processing. To better understand their sources, investigations have been focused on urban areas in the past, whereas rural-background stations are normally less impacted by surrounding anthropogenic sources. Therefore, they are predisposed for studying the impact of long-range transport of anthropogenic aerosols. Here, the chemical composition and organic aerosol (OA) sources of submicron aerosol particles measured by an aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM) and a multi-angle absorption photometer (MAAP) were investigated at Melpitz from September 2016 to August 2017. The location of the station at the frontier between western and eastern Europe makes it the ideal place to investigate the impact of long-range transport over Europe. Indeed, the station is under the influence of less polluted air masses from westerly directions and more polluted continental air masses from eastern Europe. The OA dominated the submicron particle mass concentration and showed strong seasonal variability ranging from 39 % (in winter) to 58 % (in summer). It was followed by sulfate (15 % and 20 %) and nitrate (24 % and 11 %). The OA source identification was performed using the rolling positive matrix factorization (PMF) approach to account for the potential temporal changes in the source profile. It was possible to split OA into five factors with a distinct temporal variability and mass spectral signature. Three were associated with anthropogenic primary OA (POA) sources: hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA; 5.2 % of OA mass in winter and 6.8 % in summer), biomass burning OA (BBOA; 10.6 % and 6.1 %) and coal combustion OA (CCOA; 23 % and 8.7 %). Another two are secondary and processed oxygenated OA (OOA) sources: less oxidized OOA (LO-OOA; 28.4 % and 36.7 %) and more oxidized OOA (MO-OOA; 32.8 % and 41.8 %). Since equivalent black carbon (eBC) was clearly associated with the identified POA factors (sum of HOA, BBOA, and CCOA; R2= 0. 87), eBC's contribution to each of the POA factors was achieved using a multilinear regression model. Consequently, CCOA represented the main anthropogenic sources of carbonaceous aerosol (sum of OA and eBC) not only during winter (56 % of POA in winter) but also in summer (13 % of POA in summer), followed by BBOA (29 % and 69 % of POA in winter and summer, respectively) and HOA (15 % and 18 % of POA in winter and summer, respectively). A seasonal air mass cluster analysis was used to understand the geographical origins of the different aerosol types and showed that during both winter and summer time, PM1 (PM with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 1 µm) air masses with eastern influence were always associated with the highest mass concentration and the highest coal combustion fraction. Since during wintertime CCOA is a combination of domestic heating and power plant emissions, the summer contribution of CCOA emphasizes the critical importance of coal power plant emissions to rural-background aerosols and its impact on air quality, through long-range transportation.

On the importance of the model representation of organic aerosol in simulations of the direct radiative effect of Siberian biomass burning aerosol in the eastern Arctic

Shortcomings and uncertainties in the model representation of atmospheric transformations (the aging) of organic aerosol (OA) have long been identified as one of the potential sources of considerable uncertainty in OA simulations with both global and regional models. However, the impact of this uncertainty on predictions of radiative and climate effects of both anthropogenic and biomass burning (BB) aerosol yet needs to be understood. This study examines the importance of the model representation of OA for simulating the direct radiative effect (DRE) of Siberian BB aerosol in the eastern Arctic. We employ a regional coupled chemistry-meteorology model and a global fire emission database to simulate the optical properties and DRE of BB aerosol emitted from intense Siberian fires in July 2016 and compare the DRE estimates that were obtained using two alternative representations of Siberian BB OA. One of them is a “default” OA representation that predicts very little secondary OA (SOA), and another involves a simple original OA parameterization that has been developed previously within the volatility basis set (VBS) framework and features a strong production of SOA. The simulations of the aerosol optical properties are evaluated against satellite observations of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) in Siberia and the Arctic as well as against values of the single scattering albedo derived from in situ observations of the aerosol absorption and scattering coefficients at four Arctic sites. While the simulations with the default OA representation are found to strongly underestimate AOD both in Siberia and the eastern Arctic, the use of the VBS parameterization considerably improves the agreement between the AOD simulations and observations in both regions. Simulations of the single scattering albedo are found to be overall rather adequate with both representations. Differences in the OA representations are found to result in major differences in the estimates of the DRE of Siberian BB aerosol in the eastern Arctic. Specifically, although the simulations with both representations predict that the DRE is predominantly negative at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), the magnitude of the mean DRE is found to be more than twice as large (6.0 W m−2) with the VBS parameterization than with the default OA representation (2.8 W m−2). An even larger difference (by a factor of 3.5) is found between the estimates of the DRE over the snow- or ice-covered areas. The different treatments of the BB OA evolution are associated also with considerably different contributions of black and brown carbon to the DRE estimates. Overall, our results indicate that model estimates of the DRE of Siberian BB aerosol in the eastern Arctic are strongly sensitive to the assumptions regarding the evolution of OA in Siberian BB plumes and that the SOA formation in these plumes is one of the major factors determining the magnitude of the radiative effects of Siberian BB aerosol in the real atmosphere.

Simulation of the influence of residential biomass burning on air quality in an urban area

Residential biomass burning is often one of the dominant local sources of air pollution in urban areas during the winter months. However, the corresponding particle emissions are quite uncertain and chemical transport models (CTMs) often have difficulties reproducing the observed winter particulate matter (PM) concentrations. In this work, we combine measurements from a low-cost PM sensor network and the CTM PMCAMx (Particulate Matter Comprehensive Air quality Modeling with extensions) to estimate the spatial and temporal distribution of biomass burning emissions in an urban area.An estimate of 8100 kg d−1 (40 g d−1 per person) PM2.5 emissions from residential biomass burning was calculated for the city of Patras including organic compounds with effective saturation concentrations C* up to 104 μg m−3. The spatial distribution of the emissions was based on the density of fireplaces in the city. The temporal distribution of emissions was based on measurements of the biomass burning organic aerosol (bbOA) and are higher from 18:00 to 22:00 LT peaking at 21:00 LT. The nighttime (18:00-22:00 LT) bbOA emissions were 4 times higher than the corresponding morning (8:00-13:00 LT) ones. Estimated biomass burning emissions vary from day to day based on ambient temperature, with higher emissions during the colder days. The Volatility Basis Set (VBS) was used to simulate bbOA that is treated as semi-volatile and chemically reactive.PMCAMx predicts that bbOA concentration reaches on average 15 μg m−3 in the high-density bbOA emission area during the simulated period, while the corresponding peak hourly concentrations are higher than 40 μg m−3 most of the nights. The average predicted bbOA concentration in the city center is 3–6 μg m−3 and is lower than 1 μg m−3 at the suburbs. The model predicts that bbOA concentrations peak at 9:00 LT in the morning and at 21:00 LT during the nighttime, reproducing the bbOA measurements.

Fine aerosol sources at an urban background site in the Eastern Mediterranean (Nicosia; Cyprus): Insights from offline versus online source apportionment comparison for carbonaceous aerosols

A total of 348 daily PM2.5 samples were collected at an urban background site of Nicosia, capital of Cyprus, for one-year period (October 2018–October 2019) to assess the origin and sources of fine PM at the Eastern Mediterranean, a poorly characterized area of the world.The samples were analysed for water soluble ionic species, elemental and organic carbon, carbohydrates and trace metals, the combination of which were utilized to identify pollution sources by applying Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). Six PM2.5 sources, namely long-range transport (LRT; 38 %), traffic (20 %), biomass burning (16 %), dust (10 %), sea salt (9 %) and heavy oil combustion (7 %), were identified.Despite sampling in an urban agglomeration, the chemical fingerprint of the aerosol is largely dictated by air mass origin rather than local sources. Springtime is characterized by the most elevated particulate levels due to the southerly air masses carrying particles from the Sahara Desert. Northerlies are observed throughout the year but are predominant during summer allowing the LRT source to peak (54 % during summer). Only during winter, due to extensive use of biomass combustion for domestic heating (36.6 % during winter), local sources dominate.A co-located online PMF source apportionment of submicron carbonaceous aerosols (Organic Aerosols, OA; Black Carbon) was performed by the means of an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (for OA) and an Aethalometer (for BC) for a four-month period. The comparison between the two methodologies allowed to better assess the robustness and limitations of the two methodologies. More specifically, LRT OA and biomass burning BC apportioned by the offline PMF showed a strong consistency with the online apportioned more oxidized oxygenated OA and BCwb, respectively; cross validating these sources. On the other hand, our traffic factor may contain additional hydrocarbon-like OA and BC from fossil fuel sources other than just vehicular emissions. Finally, the offline biomass burning OA source is likely to contain both primary and secondary OA.
